Email-Scams: How to Detect One, Plus a few example hoaxes!

Image
You open your email inbox and see tons of messages waiting to be reviewed. There are possibly thousands of them unchecked emails. You decide to randomly open and check the inbox. Clicking through the heaps of mails, you notice an email stating that you won 1 million euros in a lottery by BBC. You wonder whether this is true. Well, we give you the answer- this is absolutely fake, and an attempt to rob you off your money 'virtually'. Think logically. I mean, if you did not participate in any lottery (and genuine lotteries require money to participate), then how and why could you be winning a million euros? Scammers are there in millions today. They all try their level best to loot you. I'm sure that if you had been using an email service for years and revealed it somewhere or to some friend, you have received fake emails and lots of spam. I'm going to give you tips on how to recognize a fake email, which tries to look like the real one. Tip: #1: Scam mails never...

Students and Copyright: The Battle of Oxford

Image
Oxford University Press Logo     We all believe that knowledge should be pure and free. Even Wikipedia, the world's largest online encyclopedia, is driven with this motto. Information should not be owned by a single person, but rather, shared with all. This is the common practice, but some foreign publishing companies, including Oxford, is against this. Isn't this a violation of the Right to Information Act ? It is! They are violating one of our fundamental rights yet very few speak up against them. Oxford Publishing house filed a case against Rameshwari Photocopying house recently. I'm going to highlight it in detail. Rameshwari Photocopying is one of the many photocopying (Xerox) stores in India. It photocopies the books of Oxford for the students. On learning this, Oxford India filed a lawsuit against the store. The store responded by saying, "If we do not photocopy books, from where do you think good doctors will come?" This is so true. There are t...

Kai Po Che! (2013) review

Image
Film name: Kai Po Che Cast (Lead): Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Yadav, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri. Year of release: 2013 Directed by: Abishek Kapoor It had been really tough to judge the quality of Kai Po Che! as because I am biased towards Chetan Bhagat's works and ideas. "Kai Po Che!" is a film based upon Bhagat's popular fiction novel, "The 3 Mistakes of my life". It was released on the 22nd of February, 2013. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Raj Kumar. Kai Po Che is the debut of the later duo, Amit and Raj, so you will get to see some new, fresh faces on the screen. The lead female character is played by Amrita Puri, who's debut film is also, surprisingly, Kai Po Che. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, also the director of Rock On, Kai Po Che is perhaps one of the unique, cool and the best film of 2013. It shows friendship between friends- but not like other drama-filled and action filled cinemas. Kapoor has made his effort to co...

Guinness World Records 2013: A brief review

Image
It has been quite a time that the Guinness World Records 2013 (GWR 2013) was released into the public. I myself bought the book and gave it a try. I bought the book from Flipkart, and as always it had been well-packed and the delivery time was less than it was mentioned on the page. It's worth 1600 bucks, but the content is worth the money. I'll give a short review about the book. At the beginning, as usual there's the Editor's letter and the Contents. The Editor of this year is Craig Grendlay, and you wouldn't be surprised he's holding the post for years. In the "Editor's letter" he acknowledges the support received, and the enthusiasm with which people try to beat records, and such. It ends with some note of hope that may other people continue to create records for the world. At the end, he signs off. There are 12 topics on which the records are based upon. They are: Space, Green Earth, Animals, Humans, Human achievements, Adventure, ...

6 ways to enjoy after the exams!

Image
Well, it had been a silent week for IIS India, right? Pretty much. I, too was quite busy, and didn't get enough time to write new posts. The exams are finally over in most schools. What was thought as a luxury is now being seen upon as a curse by some. It's time. Before the exams, didn't you think what you'll do after the exams get over, and make a chart for things you want to do? But now after the exams, students will feel like they have no work. Studying was perhaps a better option than this. And the exams are over. No more tension! All the hours of hard work will enrich the taste of the exotic fruit that waits as a reward. In this post I'm going to get you to a groove. Chill out! First of all, relax. You might have had spent some sleepless nights. When there are a lot of exams over a number of days, the brain is overloaded and is stressed out. Give it some rest. It demands some rest right? During the holidays, make sure you sleep tight! Don't become...
