Cable v/s Set Top: Who will rule?

Image
" T arget: The four metropolitan cities. Objective: To remove cable transmission and to introduce digital transmission. Deadline: October 31st, 2012. Switch to digital transmission or forget TV" All Indians who live in metropolitan cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai- must have had heard this advertisement by the Ministry of Broadcasting, Govt. of India. The deadline of 31st October have passed away long ago and I, myself, have seen people, still using a cable connection. According to the government, using cable TV is illegal from November 1st, 2012. Those who have implemented Set-Top boxes in replacement of Cable Connection are now in doubt whether the government will change the decision and state that it is not mandatory to have one Set-top box to watch television. Even if the government does not cancel the plan- I bet that atleast 40% citizens of a metropolitan city will not be having Set Top boxes in their homes. And, we can't be blaming them. After all, ...

Being passionate about your work: The Key to Success

Image
Hello guys! I was a bit busy for some days, so couldn't post. Finally I got the opportunity yesterday, so here is another post. In this post, I will be explaining you why you should be passionate about anything you do- anything means anything, ranging from cleaning your home to studying, etc. A quick example is that I, Dipankan, love to blog. And I'm passionate about it. I do not like to copy-paste like others, as each word comes from my mind. Being passionate is something which is very important. Consider you force a individual to write a piece of article about some kind of topic, which he/she, at that moment of time, does not like to do. Yet, you force him/her. It is not that the respective individual won't write anything, but only that it'll be written in a messy and haphazard way. One can clearly recognize that the person wasn't interested to do so. However, if the opposite happens, how would the scenario be? It'd be completely different from the f...

Top 10 reasons students use as a reason for being absent- which are actually false!

Image
If you are a teacher, a staff, or a principal of any school, this article is for you. Students take leave for various reasons- fever, holiday picnic, etc. There are some students, who, in the name of these excuses do not attend school, and instead, doze at home. The IIS India team has compiled a list of 'Top 10 reasons Students use for being absent' for you. Don't worry students- there is something called "luck" that determines whether you get caught for using a fake reason! #10 : Let me start with the number 10. The number 10 is a 10 upon 10 if you judge the quality of the excuse, LOL. The reason is-" The last train/bus for reaching school had departed before I reached the station/bus stand " Seems a bit funny, right? Yes, it is. This is "just a bit popular" among students, so this becomes the #10 excuse! #9 : Next comes 9, after 10. The reason number 9 is increasingly becoming popular , as students get more creative and search f...

How the simple "LOL" has established it's place in day to day conversations

Image
A couple of days ago when I was travelling in a bus, I happened to overhear a interesting conversation. A group of teenage boys who were contemplating upon a pair of shoes to buy and one of them made a funny observation that made me laugh. But what was rather interesting was the reaction of one of his friends. Instead of actually laughing out, he merely uttered "LOL". It was not the case that I did not know what LOL meant, but it's use and implementation in face to face conversation seemed a bit out of place and was rather awkward. Later in the day, when I was narrating the incident to my elder sister, she did not find anything weird in it as it was quite commonly used. It is an official word now, and it has even found it's place in the Oxford dictionary. When words such as OMG, LOL, and FYI were included in the Oxford dictionary, they sparked off controversies, with the language purists arguing that such words will dilute the English language. Those who compil...

Iron and the Soul

Image
I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. Completely. When I was young I had no sense of myself. All I was, was a product of all the fear and humiliation I suffered. Fear of my parents. The humiliation of teachers calling me “garbage can” and telling me I’d be mowing lawns for a living. And the very real terror of my fellow students. I was threatened and beaten up for the color of my skin and my size. I was skinny and clumsy, and when others would tease me I didn’t run home crying, wondering why. I knew all too well. I was there to be antagonized. In sports I was laughed at. A spaz. I was pretty good at boxing but only because the rage that filled my every waking moment made me wild and unpredictable. I fought with some strange fury. The other boys thought I was crazy. I hated myself all the time. As stupid at it seems now, I wanted to talk like them, dress like them, carry mys...

Reasons why you should not worry about 21st December

Image
Are you worried that the Earth ends in 21st December and you got little time to live? The short answer is "No". There is no reason whatsoever to believe that the world will end soon. It is likely to take place about 5 billion years from now when the Sun expands into a Red Giant, towards the end of its own lifetime. “The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012! That’s when they predicted the world will end. It’s also when the planet Nibiru will crash into the Earth!”  I’m sure that many people have heard these claims. That facts are: (1) The Mayan calendar does NOT end on December 21, 2012. (2) The Mayans did NOT predict the end of the world, on that date or any other. (3) The planet Nibiru will NOT crash into the Earth on that date, because it simply does not exist, it's just made up.  If anyone thinks I’m wrong, then I’m willing to bet them 10,000 Rupees, which they can pay to me on December 22 when it’s obvious that these “predictions” are proven to be false.  ...

Online shopping: Why you should use it?

Image
You need not be bargaining nowadays. You need not walk out of the comfort of your home. You need not conduct a market survey to check prices. Period. Welcome to the virtual marketplace. We have been and is familiar with Big Bazaar, Spencer's, More, etc. But, from another side, names like Ebay, Flipkart, Amazon are popping out. These are mega e-supermalls- However, you cannot be walking in one of it's stores. You have to remain home, right in your chair or bed, as your preference, and 'order' the product virtually. You have to wait 2-3 business days and your product comes in home. There are tons of advantages if you buy one of these products from these online marketplaces. The greatest advantage is that you get heavy discounts. Sites such as naptol.com allow upto 80% discount at times, and that is really, really a great deal to strike upon. In the real world, you wouldn't get offers like these. There are 3 main advantages of online shopping. They are (a) He...

RPG Shooter: Appropriate or not?

Image
I've heard lots of whining and complaining from young gamers that their parents discourage them from playing shooting games in their home or in their local cyber cafe- they call it inappropriate. 'Inappropriate' in the sense that it has too much bloodshed, too much gory. 'What will my child get from playing these' is the question of every parent. I don't disagree with the fact that it doesn't have a lot of bloodshed, vulgar terms, gory, etc. In my own personal opinion- I have seen hoards of RPG shooter gamers more rude and agressive in nature than the ones who play cricket, baseball, mystery games, etc. I guess young gamers get into the game character very much these days. It'd have been completely okay if the barrier between the real and the virtual world existed. I will be neutral in this topic because both the parties (the parents and the children) are correct in their own sense. Let me begin with parents. They are true with their claim- I...

Learning with Desire: What India lacks today

Image
If you can use computer today, you are literate and is or have went to a school in your life. Yes, I don't say that there doesn't exist people who are illiterate- in India, about 35% of the people are illiterate. Since I write about youth and young people, you may be just a young person- either studying in school or maybe in college or maybe just got a job recently. Or, you maybe one of the many people reading my blog, so thank you. You may have observed a similar situation somewhere in your life. Read on to know more on what I am trying to say. The point is clear. Where is the education system in India heading to? Is it just mugging up lessons that you find in your textbook? Or is it just because you need marks? Think different, think wise. Will this mugging up session that you follow every year, increase your actual "knowledge" in any ways? I, in no way (I don't even have the interest to), discourage you from getting marks in school by mugging up texts...

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: The Blockbuster

Image
Jab Tak Hai Jaan has made blockbuster entry into Bollywood. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (Till my last breath) is a very special film as it marks the last film of the legendary and ever-remembered Yash Chopra, without whom Bollywood wouldn't have been where it is, today. Yes, I am speaking unbiased. I do not work for JTJH-So  I will try to keep it as simple as possible.  The story is interesting, yet boring since many people in this generation will not be understanding the relation between the God and Man. They can't digest too much of superstitious beliefs, which is shown between Katrina (Meera) and her God. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is also listed as the top-ten films at the United States box office.  Let me begin with Jab Tak Hai Jaan's review. This, as I said is Yash Chopra's last film. Say it or not, it is somehow special. But, from another point of view, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is very hard to judge. The green meadows, the romance and the love- Sharukh has fused all of it- to give h...

Interesting fact from the history pages!

Bahadur Shah Zafar II in 1858, captured by the British.  Bahadur Shah Zafar’s descendants want to lay claim to the Red Fort The direct descendants of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, who have long been bitter with the Indian government for not giving them their due, have now said that they will be suing to claim the Red Fort, which was the emperor's last main residence in India before he was exiled to then Burma. "My mother Sultana Begum only gets a pension of Rs 400 a month from the Indian government for being associated with the Mughal dynasty. We surely deserve better," said the great-great-granddaughter of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Raunaque Zamani Begum, 34, who lives in a small, one-room apartment in Nerul's Sector 11 with her family. Sultana Begum was married to the great-grandson of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Mirza Bedar Bakht, who died in Kolkata in 1980. The family also wants the pension paid to Sultana, who continues to live in Kolkata, to be i...

Paying for Wikipedia?

Image
When it began 11 years ago, Wikipedia represented utopian ideals: power dispersed more evenly than any democracy, participation open to anyone and work done solely for the promotion of knowledge. But utopian ideals often become diluted when put into practice on a large scale and inevitably fail. Today, to the dismay of many die-hard Wikipedians — the tenacious, voluntary editors who are the site’s backbone — the site also attracts profit-seeking writers. One such writer is Soraya Field Fiorio, a 27-year-old entertainment-relations consultant who has a sideline in writing commissioned Wikipedia articles for musicians and writers. “Just like when I write press releases, clients say, ‘I want this. I don’t want that.’ So it’s really part of a promotional package,” she said. She charges $30 an hour to edit an existing article, and will write a page from scratch for around $250. It’s not surprising that musicians, writers, artists or anyone else seeking a spot in the public eye will p...

Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone V/s 3 Idiots

Image
Five Point Someone book by Chetan Bhagat. Now, that the parties have laid the issue to rest and have decided to move on with closing statements, it maybe a good time for us the readers/the audience to take compare the book and the movie and give credit where it is due. Also now that everyone has seen the movie, I hope mentioning a few plot details won’t spoil it anymore. Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone was about three underachievers who come to terms with the system after failed attempts of cheating it. The commentary on the education system, the academic pressure all remained as the subtext as Bhagat chose to focus on the personal lives of three best friends. It was a coming-of-age story where the guys learned a few things about life. Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots is about three friends in the top-most engineering college in the country too but Hirani likes to preach and hence turns the smartass among the three into a full-blown wise man… a saint. Baba Ranchoddas. Given...
